Getting Ready to Get Ready: Linda Sibio on Voice, Emotion, and Nonlinear Thinking

Alan and Steve talk with interdisciplinary artist, educator, and Bezerk Productions founder Linda Sibio about the unusual path she has taken from her own experience with schizophrenia into decades of work using art, voice, movement, and writing with people experiencing mental-health challenges. Linda leads them through exercises from Cracked Eggs and The Insanity Principle—saying ordinary words through contrasting emotions, connecting rhythm and voice to the body, and even learning to see the empty spaces around an object.

For music educators, the conversation keeps returning to a simple idea: some students may need help “getting ready to get ready.” Linda challenges us to think beyond one definition of readiness and consider how movement, emotion, sound, perception, and nonlinear thinking can become entry points into creative work.

About Linda Sibio

Linda Carmella Sibio is an American performance artist, painter, and advocate for artists living with mental illness. Born in West Virginia, she earned her BFA in painting from Ohio State University in 1975 and later studied with performance artist Rachel Rosenthal. Her work draws on her personal experiences with mental illness and her family’s history, bringing those experiences into both visual art and performance. She has presented work at venues including the Walker Art Center, Highways Performance Space, and galleries in New York and California. Alongside her own artistic practice, Sibio has led performance groups supporting artists with mental disabilities, including those who have experienced homelessness. In 2000, she co-founded Cracked Eggs, an interdisciplinary troupe dedicated to advancing their artistic work.
