Dr. Ryan V. Scherber
Dr. Ryan V. Scherber (he/him/his) is Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of Bands at Case Western Reserve University as well as Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium for the Joint Music Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Scherber’s duties include teaching music education coursework at the undergraduate and graduate level with specialties in student teaching, instrumental music pedagogy, conducting, and quantitative research methodology. Dr. Scherber also teaches the CWRU Tuba & Euphonium Studio, provides oversight of CWRU Bands, and serves as Program Director for the music education licensure program as Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies in Music Education. In addition to his duties with CWRU, Dr. Scherber serves as Assistant Director of the Florida State University Summer Music Camps. Scherber holds the Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music as well as the Master of Music and Ph.D. in Music Education from Florida State University. Prior to his appointment at CWRU, Dr. Scherber taught music at the elementary, middle, and high school levels within the Southeastern Local District in South Charleston, Ohio.
Dr. Scherber’s research interests include pitch perception, nonverbal behaviors, and classroom interactions. His publications have appeared in Research Perspectives in Music Education, the Florida Music Director, Kansas Music Review, and the Journal of Band Research. He has presented research at international, state, regional and national venues including the The Midwest Clinic, International Society for Music Education, NAfME Biennial National Conference, Desert Skies Symposium on Research in Music Education, Ohio Music Educators Association Conference, and the Texas Music Educators Association Conference. Additionally, Dr. Scherber’s ensembles have been invited to perform at the Ohio Music Education Associate Professional Development Conference as well as featured university ensemble for the Northeastern Ohio Band Invitation at Severance Hall. Dr. Scherber is also a frequent invited guest clinician and adjudicator for school band ensembles. Dr. Scherber has studied conducting with Terrence Milligan, Rodney Winther, and Alexander Jímenez, as well as tuba with Timothy Northcut, William Weikert, Raymond Stewart, and Paul Ebbers.
